First of all what is radon?
This is one of the best explanations I have read (from John Handloser at Pillar to Post):
Radon is a cancer-causing natural radioactive gas that you can’t see, smell or taste. Radon is a radioactive gas. It comes from the natural decay of uranium that is found in nearly all soils. Its presence in your home can pose a danger to your family’s health. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in America and claims about 20,000 lives annually.
What areas have Radon?
To see what Virginia localities have potential for radon, click here to see the “EPA Map of Radon Zones“. You will see that much of the Charlottesville and surrounding areas fall in EPA Zones 1 (highest potential) and 2 (moderate potential).
What if I have Radon?
Mitigation is recommended for homes testing at a radon level of 4 pCi/L or more
